About the project
The Respect 2040 Image Library was created to help organisations, local governments and community groups across the Barwon South West access images that better reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. The project aims to challenge stereotypes, affirm respect and increase the availability of authentic, inclusive imagery that represents people in all their dimensions, interests and experiences.
Developed through extensive consultation with community members and representatives from across the region, the library is guided by principles of authenticity, inclusion and respectful representation. Images focus on people as whole individuals, capturing everyday life, relationships, work, recreation, culture, learning and community participation.
The project also supports local creative industries by commissioning and paying photographers and community member models from across the region, creating opportunities for both established and emerging photographers to showcase their work and contribute to a shared community resource.

About the photographers
The establishment of the Respect 2040 Image Library features the work of professional photographers from across the South West region, bringing together a range of creative perspectives, experiences and photographic styles. Each photographer was provided with a project brief and guidance developed through community consultation to help ensure the images authentically represent local people, challenge stereotypes and reflect the diversity of our communities. Within that framework, photographers were encouraged to bring their own artistic approach and work collaboratively with participants to capture images that felt genuine, respectful and true to the people involved.
Alongside established professional photographers, the project also created an opportunity for emerging photographer Priyanka Khairnar, who was mentored through the process by a more experienced photographer. Priyanka invited participants to bring something to their photo shoot that reminded them of home, resulting in a collection of deeply personal images that explore identity, belonging, culture, comfort and connection in ways that are unique to each individual.

About the models
The Respect 2040 Image Library features local community members from across the South West region. Participants were invited to share their interests, experiences, communities, workplaces, hobbies and everyday lives, helping to create a collection of images that more authentically reflects the diversity of people who live here. Rather than being defined by a single characteristic, participants were encouraged to represent themselves in ways that felt genuine, meaningful and true to who they are. The result is a library of images that celebrates individuality, challenges stereotypes and showcases the many different ways people contribute to and connect with their communities.
Participants worked collaboratively with photographers to decide how and where they would be photographed, ensuring the images reflected their own interests, stories and sense of identity. Across the collection, you’ll see people represented through their relationships, work, creativity, culture, recreation, leadership, learning and everyday experiences.
We thank all participants for their contribution to the Respect 2040 Image Library and for helping create a more diverse, inclusive and representative collection of images for our region.
